CAPTAIN YEARN STEALS THE SHOW AS COVENTRY CITY WIN MEN'S OPEN
Published on: 27 July 2025

A youthful Coventry City side beat Corinthians 2-0 in the final of the Soccer7sSeries Men’s Open thanks to a spectacular final performance from captain Kai Yearn. In the space of two seven-minute halves, 20-year-old Yearn scored a goal, got an assist and made a goal-line clearance for his own hat-trick of sorts to drive the Blues to the trophy. It was a well-earned title for unbeaten Coventry who got better as the tournament went on – the final victory against an experienced and classy Corinthians team was the culmination of their journey. In the Plate competition, two goals from Gabriel Quak ensured home team Singapore FC were able to win some silverware. Meanwhile Hashtag United won the Shield competition to give social media plenty to talk about, defeating Albirex Niigata 3-0 in the final. As the final day got underway, Hashtag and QPR played out a humdinger in the first quarter-final of the Men’s Open. A back-and-forth affair ended 2-2 meaning the teams were reduced to four players each and the match went into golden goal. QPR captain Jake Leahy proving the different maker scoring from near the halfway line as the West London team stole the ball and broke away with the keeper up the other end. Selangor FC were also knocked out on golden goal after full time finished goalless in their match against Vasco da Gama with Glauberson finishing a team move straight from the extra-time kick-off. Corinthians joined their fellow Brazilians in the semi-finals after comfortably beating Taichung Rock 2-0 to set up the match against QPR. Coventry City ensured it would be two Brazil v England finals after Joshua Toluwaloju’s second-half winner saw them get past Shanghai Shenhua 1-0. The Chinese team had come into the day as favourites with a perfect record from Group D but were just outdone in a tight game as they felt the bite of what knockout football can provide. So, it was QPR v Corinthians first up in the semis with the early stages relatively cagey with a place in the final on the line. But Cristian Barbosa was able to break the deadlock, cheekily getting his head on a goal-bound shot to put Corinthians 1-0 up at half-time. The Brazilians turned on the style in the second half and controlled the game from there until the full-time whistle. Coventry City took the lead in the second semi-final against Vasco da Gama via a gorgeous flick of Tristen Batanwi’s heel as the first half came to a close. Elliot Betjemann put the game to bed in the dying stages with a lovely low finish from a Blues break. Then, as the two teams lined up for the final it was time for Coventry captain Yearn to grab the game by the scruff of the neck. He first came up with the goods midway through the first half from a free-kick 25-yards out whipped with pace onto the keeper’s side to wrong-foot him. Yearn then saved his team a goal at the other end of the pitch not long later, Captain Marvel tracking back and sliding to clear the ball off his own line. He then truly made the final his by providing the perfect cross from a free-kick for Batanwi to nod in Coventry’s second. A couple of really smart saves from City goalkeeper Oscar Varney then kept Corinthians out as the game entered its final stages and the Blues were able to earn the Soccer7sSeries crown in Singapore to take back to the English Midlands.
