Leicester City Masters beat a scrappy COSMO Masters 1-0 through Martyn Waghorn’s screamer to become the first ever Masters champions of the Soccer7sSeries. A team featuring five of their legendary Premier League winning side were a cut above in the end to give captain Wes Morgan the chance to lift another trophy. Previously unbeaten Borussia Dortmund, who had looked a shoo-in for the final, were shocked in extra-time of their semi-final as Singapore’s own COSMO Masters won 1-0 courtesy of Sam Taylor’s golden goal. In the Masters Plate it was Corinthians Masters who lifted the trophy after defeating East London All Stars 2-0 in the final, with goals coming from David Santos da Silva and Edson Adalto Girão. After three days of action, the final day of the Soccer7sSeries Masters event kicked off with an all-Premier League semi as Leicester faced Forest Reds. With Robert Huth in an unfamiliar position up-front following his winning goal the previous day, it was Leicester making the early pressure. And the German was able to once again put the Foxes ahead at the end of the first half after Bartosz Białkowski’s stunning save landed at his feet to put in the rebound. Early in the the second half, David Nugent got in on the action firing home a nice move to put Leicester two up. And from there Forest were never able to get back into it as Leicester managed the game to completion. In the second semi-final, underdogs COSMO frustrated Dortmund, who had won every game so far, with some dogged play during the first half as they made it to the break goalless. With Masters golden boot winner Michael Sharples always an option leading the line, the German team had to be mindful of the COSMO counterattack. But both teams found space hard to come by as the game ended goalless and headed into a 4v4 golden goal period. COSMO won the important drop ball start but were unable to score from their first attack. Dortmund then passed their way to the other end of the pitch, but COSMO were throwing their bodies in front of everything to finally regain possession and break, only for Sharples to shoot agonisingly over the bar. With time expiring again, the teams were reduced to three players each. It was Taylor who drove home the golden goal into the side net from a tight angle not long after also winning the kick-off to stun Dortmund and send the Singaporean team into the final. But there they faced a team full of Premier League experience – and winners medals – which proved a step too far. It took just two minutes for former England under-21 man Waghorn to break the deadlock with a super strike from outside the area giving the keeper absolutely no chance. And from there, initially through the metronome passing of Danny Drinkwater, Leicester were able to put a chokehold on the game. And even after Drinkwater departed the pitch, the Foxes team followed suit and passed COSMO into oblivion to take the title. A consolation prize for COSMO came in the form of Sharples’ four goals across the tournament earning him the golden boot while Waghorn was also named Player of the Tournament.
