Day 1 Report
SHANGHAI SHENHUA SHINE IN THE WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT
Published on: 25 July 2025

Shanghai Shenhua Women were undoubtedly the team of Day 1 at the Soccer7sSeries as they came roaring out the blocks to score eight goals in two games and secure six points in the Women’s tournament. The Chinese side started their campaign by putting four past both Corinthians Feminino and then followed this up with another four-goal feast against Albirex Niigata FC Women – with just one goal conceded the only blot on their perfect day topping Group A. Yu Jia Hiu, against Feminino, was also the first player of the tournament to score a hat-trick in the second game of the whole event and she sits top of the scoring charts heading into Day 2 tomorrow with three. In fact, Shenhua looked a good bet to end the day as the only women’s team on six points only for QPR Hoops, who had themselves beaten Still Aerion 5-0 earlier in the day, to score a later winner through Grace Stanley against Hashtag United. This ensured the West London team also ended the day on six points to top Group B. Geylang International and QPR Women began proceedings for the Soccer7sSeries with the very first game of event and it was Rangers who came out on top 2-0 winners to make a great start. And that set the tone for a Women’s tournament which saw plenty of goals, some stunning saves, multiple late heroics and celebrations that’ll live long in the memory for the players and fans. The highlight of the chasing pack behind Hoops and Shenhua was an epic penalty save from Selangor FC goalkeeper Ezza Ashikin to keep out the last kick of the match, ensuring the Malaysian side took all three points against Eastern Thunder Women. With joyous celebrations continuing immediately after the save, through the final whistle, and as they left the pitch, the team were able to reflect on a fantastic day joining QPR Women on four points. Both clubs now sit second in their respective groups after QPR Women drew with Corinthians Feminino in their second game. The Men’s Open certainly has plenty to live up to after a brilliant first day and they will start their campaigns tomorrow on Day 2 while the Women’s and Masters play out their final group games to jostle for position ahead of the knockouts on Sunday.
