Borussia Dortmund set the early standard on Day 1 of the Soccer7sSeries Masters tournament as the Black and Yellow lifted themselves to the top of Group A as the only team with a perfect record of two wins in two. With Singapore playing host to some of the legends of football’s yesteryear, the ex-Premier League, Bundesliga and international stars showed their competitive instinct had never dulled – and neither had their skills. With Robert Earnshaw’s tricks and flicks, Dortmund’s professional wins against a pair of strong teams full of ex-Premier League stars and the old Wes Morgan and Robert Huth partnership still yet to concede it was a true throwback. And with a hat-trick, some sublime individual goals and even a long-range effort or two to excite fans at the Jalan Besar Stadium there were plenty of vibes to go around. In the opening Masters game, it was England versus Brazil with Leicester City Masters and Corinthians Masters playing out a 0-0 draw as the teams felt each other out in the early stages. In the mouth-watering match-up of East London All Starts against Borussia Dortmund, it was the German team who came out on top with South Korea’s Park Jo-Hoo the difference maker in the second half. Forest Reds, through James Perch’s brace in a 2-0 win against Singapore FC Masters, and Leicester City Masters were able to both get wins on the board on Day 1. Danny Drinkwater tapped home his first goal of the tournament to follow-up Lloyd Dyer’s opener to make it 2-0 against COSMO Masters for the Foxes. With players getting used to the hot and humid conditions, Dortmund and Forest Reds were the first to be given a respite as the rain came lashing down in their final game of the day – Dortmund running out 2-0 winners and Park getting his second of the day. After their disappointment against Leicester City Masters, COSMO Masters came roaring back winning 5-0 against Real Singapura with No.7 Michael Sharples scoring a gorgeous first-half hat-trick. Sharples also now sits top of the Masters goals chart after Day 1. Arguably the goal of the day came in the final match of the day, as Dan Bennett blasted in a long-range effort to ensure Singapore FC Masters – playing on home soil – fittingly ended the first day of the Soccer7sSeries with a victory. Leicester City Masters sit top of Group A on four points followed by COSMO Masters one point behind in third and PERSIB Masters one further back after two draws against Corinthian Masters and Real Singapura FC. Dortmund have that all-important perfect record in Group B with two wins, three goals and none conceded - one they'll want to keep as we head into Day 2 tomorrow.
